Public bug reported:

Last friday i started a dist upgrade using the Update Manager. It said
it could upgrade to 7.04 but the further dialog said 6.10, so i
cancelled the first attempt while downloading. Then i figured it wasn't
my problem, and tried again. Today i found the instal stuck on a MD
array question (I don't even *have* a RAID array or any /dev/md*!).
After entering nothing in its box and also saying that it should
automatically start, the install failed with "installArchives() failed"
and told me to attach the log files in /var/log/dist-upgrade, so here i
am.

Celeron 2.8GHz, 512-64 MB RAM, and the undetected ALI sound chip (that
reportedly worked in Dapper).

** Affects: Ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Unconfirmed
