i like it as is.. search item, gimme list. i pick. example: i open dash, type "sys", a few related apps show up. then i pick whichever it is i want. i don't see anything wrong with that flow even if the first app [left to right] is the one i want to pick. in the case of jeremy above, i'd just add the app in question to the launcher panel. open app, open file with app. or, put the file directly on desktop [or symlink to it]. double-click and done. even faster that way.
