I just had a very similar experience, except with kernel 2.6.20-15-generic, with an up-to-date Feisty as of May 4 2007 (otherwise it appears similar).
I plugged my ipod into my Compaq Presario V2000 laptop by usb, at which point my usb optical mouse stopped working. Unplugging and replugging the mouse did not reactivate it, and the red indicator LED in the mouse just blinked on and off while it was plugged in. The ipod did not appear to be recognized, and did not display the 'do not disconnect' screen. My synaptics trackpad (on /dev/psaux, receiving core events) still worked but very quickly became drastically overheated, at which point I rebooted, with all usb devices plugged in and now they all appear to work, and the trackpad has returned to normal. There was nothing exceptional about my usage up to that point - Firefox, Rhythmbox, a terminal running emacs, and gaim.
