I uninstalled, reinstalled mysql. I had to remove residue from the old install /etc/mysql and others. I re-installed, moved the directory, configured my.cnf before ever running mysql and it works fine now.
A bump in the night, not able to reproduce. Ubuntu sent off the report before I could stop it. Thanks for your help.
