After exploring the Ubuntu community support site, I found this
excellent resource:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure.  I
followed the steps and voilĂ !  A working sound system...

This "bug" was apparently a user bug...  I must've done somethin' wrong
somewhere sometime...  Anyway, this is no bug for anyone to be wasting
her time on!
