I installed Gentoo Linux with kernel 2.6.17-r4 and found that it installed without problem on the Z96J. The minimal install CD came with kernel 2.6.15, I believe (same as what Ubuntu uses). It is not clear to me what this implies but it at least gives hope that Ubuntu could fix or work around the problem.
