My current fix for this is to actually install the version from Karmic (older version works with current kernel and newer version breaks ?) So have added the karmic repos to sources.list and pinned the am-utils version to 6.1.5-12ubuntu1 also need libamu4 to be pinned as well (to 6.1.5-12ubuntu1 again)
Seems that this worked on my lucid alpha install and was then broken for the LTS release. Have been living in hope that there would be a 6.1.5-12ubuntu3 that would fix this again.
