I tried the kernel 3.0 and it (3.0.0-7.9, pinned from oneiric) and it only made things worse. The computer now lockups completely, without even "eth0: link up" in dmesg or on-screen kernel stack trace. It takes couple of days to reach that, with heavy CPU, disk and network load.
I then disabled the onboard r8169 card and tried an Intel1000e PCIx card (03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82574L Gigabit Network Connection) with the kernel 3.0. It worked for couple of hours, with the network getting stuck for 30 seconds a time after each 15 minutes or so (without whatsoever message in dmesg). This probably warrants separate bug. I then switched back to the stock 2.6.38-8-server (of ubuntu 11.04) using Intel1000e PCIx and so far so good. I will report here if anything turns up. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/784335 Title: Heavy network utilization with r8169 leads to kernel panic To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/784335/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
