Could you describe what you mean by "system freeze". Ie, what did you had on screen ? Was it just blank ?
Also, have you tried doing Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch to a virtual console, or Ctrl-Alt-BackSpace to kill the X server ? If you press the CapsLock key, do the corresponding LED on your keyboard lit ?
