This is not just a problem in Unity, but also happens with the gnome-
panel in Ubuntu Classic. I remember it used to happen in maverick too.

It does seem to be a bug in geeqie itself, not using full-screen
correctly.

       Status: New => Confirmed

** Summary changed:

- Full screen in unity leaves a gap for the launcher
+ geeqie full screen fails to obscure any dock windows: unity launcher/panel or
gnome-panel.

   http://sourceforge.net/support/tracker.php?aid=2925034

** Also affects: geeqie via
