Oh, is there a BIOS setting for the watchdog?  I don't remember seeing
one.

In my case (Archlinux) this module comes with the kernel:

./modules/3.0-ARCH/kernel/drivers/watchdog/nv_tco.ko.gz is owned by linux

I just upgraded to kernel 3.0 last night, I wonder if by any chance this
is fixed now.  That patch you referenced looks like it could be the
cause of this issue, but I'm sure this has been going on much longer
than a month -- I would say more like 6 months to a year for me.
