Update: seems that "options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=3stack" fixes this after all. I still can't quite believe it. But it would be a step forward if this manual editing of configuration was not needed. It took me over a year to stumble over the correct configuration line. So, although the fix was available for approx 3 years I was using extra set of external USB-speakers and/or switching cable from output to output to get the functionality. Still, my apologies for wasting your time.
