My display server reverted to the Mesa GL SW fallback driver after an upgrade
to Oneiric. Yet, when trying to open the regular Desktop session, the screen
was still empty after 20s.
Reverting to the unity-2d session, I tried starting unity --replace, and it
told me:

compiz (unityshell) - Error: GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object not supported
compiz (core) - Error: InitPlugin 'unityshell' failed
compiz (core) - Error: Couldn't activate plugin 'unityshell'
glcinfo showed that I was using the SW fallback driver.
I was expecting the 3D session to automatically fallback to 2D in that
case.
