Perhaps I had the same problem after all.  I got the desktop to display
but still wasn't able to open it in nautilus or in the file selector
dialogue.  Nautilus hung and pegged the CPU.

I moved everything from my desktop to a backup directory, and moved
items back one-by-one.  The culprit was a custom application launcher
with a custom icon.  When I create a launcher with that particular icon,
bang the CPU redlines.

I'm not sure of the protocol here, should I attach the offending icon?
Hope that's OK, I'll go ahead and do it.  It's the bluefish-icon.svg
from the Nuovo theme.  Cute, isn't he?  :-)
