I'm seeing the same symptoms after having upgraded from Edgy to Feisty.
I'm also using VLC controlled by through telnet interface (to transcode
an MPEG4 file to an MPEG2 stream).  I'm also using a Hauppauge MVP
running mvpmc at the other end.

The crash is completely reproducible on Feisty (this working fine on
Edgy).  The source file is a pretty standard MPEG4 AVI with mp3 audio,
and it plays fine in VLC if I'm just trying to play it locally.  This is
the console output I get when seeing the crash:
