Echo in the room? #18 worked for me, too. I had two different computers with this problem, both running 10.04 LTS, one an old 32-bit Ubuntu, and the other a 64-bit Kubuntu. #18 fixed them both.
Thank you! BTW, I agree that this is a serious problem for Ubuntu.
