I wanted to add to this discussion that I encountered this error as well with Firefox 2.0.0.3 (latest to date) in Mac OS X 10.4.9.
I discovered that, when I get the error, if I restart Firefox and re-try to install an extension that I have success. But, upon trying to install another extension, I get the error again. So, at that point, I could get around it by restarting each time. Next, I tried renaming "extensions.rdf" and letting Firefox re-create it. After doing this, I no longer get the error message!!
