I created a new user account 'guest' and password.  When I log in under this 
account both the Unity desktop AND the Trash bin appear.  But... there is 
NOTHING in the trash bin.
I will raise a separate bug on Unity not appearing if you think it's necessary, 
based on your reply.  I don't understand WHY any of this sort of stuff happens 
when I upgrade every 6 months.  Perhaps I just don't know how to answer the 
questions ('... keep or discard...' that sort of thing) that come up during the 
install.  Maybe this is where the problem lies.  But.. I didn't notice the 
Trash bin wasn't working for several months, until I decided to do some serious 
housekeeping.

  LibreOffice appears up when I try to open Trash, stating that it does
