It's not GNOME generally, so much as the XRender Cairo backend. The NVidia driver seems to have trouble with power management when switching between (or simultaneously using) XRender and OpenGL. If one of these is avoided, there are no issues. Note that many users report more success when using a GL-based desktop, perhaps indicating the problem is with context swtiching between 2D and 3D acceleration. I'm sure that other major users of XRender along with OpenGL have the same issue (on nvnews.net, this issue has also been reported with KDE).
