One further detail which may or may not be related. When I login from
gdm screen to gnome desktop (wireless setup with Roaming disabled &
static ip -- so wireless not working as described above -- & wired eth0
physically disconnected -- so no outside data communication at all),
desktop loading is very slow (maybe 10 times slower than when some
network connection is present). Also, desktop operation is slow ie.
takes 10-20 seconds for a terminal window to open, takes 10-20 seconds
for System>Administration>Network to open network manager.

The bug I describe above may be connected with other reported 'slow
desktop' bugs such as Bug #94048.

Perhaps avahi is to blame here as well???
