OK, I have sound now based on a workaround in the forums.  Here is what I did 
based on suggestion here: 
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=415821&page=4

sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel probe_mask=8 model=3stack

instead of

sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel probe_mask=8 model=auto

I also did it in recovery mode straight off the grub menu as root
instead of as my normal user.

I am not sure which did it the change to 3stack or the recovery mode...
Not going to mess with it now that it is working!
