Hi, all. If the status is really Fix Released, something must have
changed for the worse in Natty, or I missed something in this bug report
that explains how to solve the issue. I am running Natty 64 bit on my
Asus K60IJ, and I can either get sound out of both headphones and front
speakers, have both headphones and front speakers muted, OR get sound at
a very low volume out of my headphones and at a variable volume out of
my front speakers at the same time.

If anyone knows of a workaround other than removing Pulseaudio I'd be
grateful to learn of it. I know that removing Pulseaudio fixes this
issue, but of course it breaks the volume control function of the sound
indicator applet.
