I also have a Dell XPS 15z, and the trackpad was initially not working.
I'm using Debian/unstable, but with with kernel 3.0-rc5. After playing with the
psmouse
module a bit, I managed to get it to work. Namely, any of these commands worked
for me:

rmmod psmouse; modprobe psmouse proto=bare
rmmod psmouse; modprobe psmouse proto=imps
rmmod psmouse; modprobe psmouse proto=exps

Before I was getting:

psmouse.c: Failed to enable mouse on isa0060/serio1

Now, I get one of:

input: PS/2 Generic Mouse as /devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input17
input: ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse as
/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input16

It's likely that some of the multi-fingered gestures are not working properly,
but it
works well enough for my daily use so that I don't need an external USB mouse.

Hope this helps.
