Ouch. The behaviour has changed. I tested extensively prior to submitting, however, after making the following two changes things seem to be working again:
1. Close VMWare Player (suspending Windows VM) and restart (resuming VM). 2. Suspend laptop overnight. Now, everything appears to work OK, noting as Julian did above, the gnome-terminal funny stuff. So, I can no longer reproduce.
