Same problem here but I got it since I upgraded from Edgy to Feisty. I have an nVidia Geforce 7300 with ubuntu nvidia drivers and I just noticed it did that since I had compiz activated. When I do a CTRL ALT BACKSPACE, my the black screen (sometimes I can see the mouse cursor) flashes the wallpaper and then the sign-on screen appers.
I noticed if I had some music running before closing the laptop, it restarts when I reopen it.
