Thanks for all the testing, everyone! I have now sent an email upstream asking for advice on how to proceed on enabling EAPD by default (see http://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa- devel/2011-June/041376.html ). Meanwhile you should be able to turn on EAPD at boot by running an hda-verb command from /etc/rc.local or something.
