I think I'm experiencing this same problem, but with the ati (open source) driver. When it freezes, I am sometimes able to do Alt-F2 to get to the console and kill compiz (and then continue operation), but most of the time it's a complete freeze - requiring a reboot. My machine is HP Pavilion dv6, with AMD Radeon HD 6470M.
