My experience with this bug is that if I enter the pin code myself,
instead of having the N900 communicate with the SIM card, it works:

This workaround is coherent with my above quote regarding waiting before
communicating with /dev/ttyACM0 (because it takes at least a second or
so to enter my PIN code).
