As I was told by bapoumba ubuntuforums user: "From the command line, please enter sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. Keep the default answers if you do not know what to answer. Pay attention to your screen settings, this is probably what makes your graphical session (starting with GDM) not available. Once you're done, enter sudo reboot, and your session should be running back again."
