rmmod rt2800usb did the trick!
rt2780sta is apparently the right driver to use, and rt2800usb hijacked
my device.

If you still want the output, I guess I'll have to disconnect and copy
it. But I assume this can be marked as solved - however I'm not sure how
to patch it. Is it upstream rt2x00 development that has to be notified?
