I think I might have fixed this. Fingers crossed. Beware of the Asus
P2-P5945GC. The construction is very cramped and tricky. I checked
connections over and over. Then I discovered that I could find the
hidden hd end of the serial ata cable with my finger. It moved just
slightly. Since then things seem to be OK. I even changed the hd so this
must have also happened previously.

Sorry for the false alarm. Fingers still crossed.
