This installation got even worse as keyboard bindings eventually caused
the "2" key to switch DVI output to a mode my monitor would not support.
You could work for a few minutes by resetting keyboard in System >
Preferences > Keyboard.but eventually typing a "2" would hang the system
display.
Incorrectly believing that "64" would yield better performance than
"32", I came to my senses and installed the i386 version which fixed a
raft of problems including this one.
