Thanks Ursula, that stopped the segmentation fault. The /etc/xpdf/xpdfrc file does not seem to be read, maybe xpdf has been compiled to look elsewhere? Changes to the psFile line have no effect. So I copied that file to ~/.xpdfrc and now the psFile is setting is being read.
