spoke too soon about the "-o filename" fix... sigh. In my case, it definitely fixes the tab completion issue, but when you start a new gnome-terminal instance, this will cause about 50-60 error messages to pop up on the start that are all the same: "-bash: complete: filename: invalid option name"
