i'm experiencing this issue in Ubuntu 11.04 (64bit). The freezes do not happen every time, it's random. I am not able to enter into a console when this happens either so I have to shutdown the system forcibly.
If I move my cursor around when it freezes, the cursor sometimes turns to a caret.
