According to http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/print/dell_laser_1700_1700n.pdf the Dell 1700 supports the following printer languages: PCL5e, PCL6 and additionally PostScript Level 3 for 1700n. So please try if the PPD that came with your printer works.
