Binary package hint: alpine
The version of alpine in universe is old enough to have bugs like
altering sent email content - it should either be dropped or upgraded to
a later version to see if it has fixes for this type of issues.
In this case I was trying to read a text/diff file into alpine as a
patch to send and I noticed it deleted some newlines which messed up the
patch by joining the two "+"s in the patch.
