I just tested this on Ubuntu 10.10, using vinagre version 2.30.2. I
still experience this error, with the following output when the username
is specified for the ssh tunnel:

vinagre --gtk-vnc-debug
(vinagre:3621): gvnc-DEBUG: vncconnection.c Init VncConnection=0xa0c5300
gtk-vnc: vncdisplaykeymap.c Using evdev keycode mapping
gtk-vnc: vncdisplay.c Expose area 484x819 at location 0,0
gtk-vnc: vncdisplay.c Display destroy, requesting that VNC connection close
gtk-vnc: vncdisplay.c Display destroy, requesting that VNC connection close
gtk-vnc: vncdisplay.c Releasing VNC widget
(vinagre:3621): gvnc-DEBUG: vncconnection.c Finalize VncConnection=0xa0c5300
