Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qgis

I recently wanted have a look into qgis. So I tried the tutorial.
http://download.osgeo.org/qgis/doc/manual/qgis-1.6.0_user_guide_en.pdf
It says on page 11, at point 6 to load a vector map by opening the file
lakes.gml. But although (or because) I've got the latest ubuntu (11.04)
qgis fails to open the file. And this is somehow frustrating if you want
to start with something and nearly the first thing to try doesn't work.

So I googled and found somebody saying, one could convert a gml file by
saying something like

ogr2ogr -f GML lakes2.gml lakes.gml.

But it failed. Actually the output (the output of ogrinfo is attached)
guided me to the GDAL-Util-Package. Could it be that in ubuntu 11.04 the
gdal-package is not linked to the xerces-library?

** Affects: qgis (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New

Title:
QGis cannot import gml-data, perhaps because Xerces is not linked in
  GDAL-Util-Package
