I don't know about the original poster, but I have fixed this issue on my machine.
Apparently with feisty there is an update to the e1000 driver that enables some functionality on the card that vmware doesn't take kindly too. I couldn't find any options with modinfo that would make e1000 act like it used too. The card works great for everything but vmware.
