William and Daniel, thanks for noticing the (partial?) relationship with other bugs. That's how I found this one.
badhorse, ZaHACKieL and Daniel -- you mention using nVidia cards. I run a 64-bit Maverick with nVidia card as well. In my case, the bug seems to disappear after upgrading nVidia binary drivers to 270.41.06 using ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates.
