I'll let everyone know if I publish any updated packages. I'm hoping an
actual package maintainer will step in here at some point however.

A workaround for now is to kill nm-applet and restart it. You could do
this first thing in the morning every day maybe. When you restart it, do

nm-applet --sm-disable

You can just do this using your own user account. Root privileges are
not needed. Alternatively, I think logging out and logging back in
should restart the applet.
