This is what I get during a recovery start-up - obviously text in there somewhere - it scrolls up the screen. I do get a normal grub boot selection screen first - which is clearly legible.
I was unable to get a photo of the shutdown screen which shows a line of 1 pixel high dots and dashes across the middle of the screen for about 5 secs just before hang-up. I hope this helps someone identify what may be happening - or if they have something similar. cheers.
