When you run vbeinfo, grub reports a preferred resolution at the end. Could it be that grub is trying to switch to this resolution, failing if it is not one of the supported VESA modes? 16:9 and 16:10 modes are usually not among those, yet a great deal of (if not almost all) modern computers have such screens...
