I've just done a reinstall of 10.04, and I'm having this problem too. In the past it has been sort of working, but not well. None of the 'solutions' are working for me. I use this feature a lot, especially to help friends who I've converted to Ubuntu, so it's very frustrating. I also use it to manage the majority of my computers, as they are headless, so this is becoming a real pain for me too. I appreciate that everyone is busy with fixing stuff for Unity, so directions to a viable and easy to configure alternative would be very much appreciated.
