Just installed linux 2.6.38-9.43 from ubuntu proposed. This seems to resolve this issue in intial testing. Old behaviour was a direct lock- up, which doesn't occur anymore (as I'm typing this using my wireless connection). I'll do some more testing and update the bug if this is indeed the solution.
