but why then does 2.6.39-999-generic from the 2011-04-19-natty not work?

One possibility I can think of is that different modules are used. The lspci -k 
command is useful for determining which module is in use and which ones are 
available. e.g.: 
lspci -k | grep Network --after-context 3
