here is another sequence.... 
if i log in with the modem attached to the computer nm-applet crashes until i 
remove the modem and start nm-applet by hand. (i'm filing a seperate bug with 
gnome about this).
then it prompts me for the PIN, the first time i enter it and press return 
nothing happens, the dots don't show up on the nm-applet "enter PIN" window, 
the second time i enter the PIN the dots show up but when I press return a 
message appears at the bottom of the screen saying "operation not permitted". I 
hit return again and the window disappears. Then I notification pops up saying 
"GSM network disconnected" and the GSM network is not visible in the NM list of 
connections - the modem is being redecected by the kernel. We go through this 
procedure 2 or 3 times and eventually i connect.
