I confirm the bug on an Asus A6ja Centrino Duo with Ati Mobility Radeon X1600. I've tried both modifing the xorg.conf and a sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, but they didn't work for me.
Also the first workaround gives a crash, telling "Caught signal 11. Server aborting". I'll try later the Rey's workaround and tell you.
