After investigating this a bit more, it looks like this only happens when the GConf key /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop is unchecked. In this situation, closing the last open window by any of the following methods results in the title persisting in the panel: - Clicking the "X" button of an un-maximized window - Pressing Alt+F4 - Clicking File ▸ Quit The problem never happens after clicking the "X" button of a maximized window, or when the show_desktop key is checked.
